How to read the appraisal screen — IVs without typing

Bar position is IV. Bar color matters. The corner ★ is your shortcut. Here is the cheat sheet.

The in-game appraisal screen tells you every IV in seconds — if you know what to look at. Bar count = IV value, bar color = team-leader rating, corner star = 100%. The full visual decoder.

Most trainers spend years tapping each stat bar and trying to count segments. There's a faster way. Once you understand the visual grammar of the appraisal screen, you can read any mon's IVs in under 2 seconds without typing a single number. This post is the decoder.

The appraisal screen, layer by layer

Layer 1: the three stat bars (the IV themselves)

The bars show Attack / Defense / HP in that vertical order. Each bar is filled into segments. The number of filled segments equals the IV value divided by some factor — but the simpler way to read it is by counting the segments.

  • 0 segments filled → IV is 0
  • 1 segment, partial → IV is 1-4
  • 1 segment, full → IV is 5
  • 2 segments, partial → IV is 6-9
  • 2 segments, full → IV is 10
  • 3 segments, partial → IV is 11-14
  • 3 segments, full and the bar glows red → IV is 15 (perfect)

The red glow is the killer detail. A fully-filled bar without the glow is 10. A fully-filled bar WITH the red glow is 15. Most trainers miss this distinction.

Layer 2: bar color = team-leader rating bucket

Each stat bar's color is set by your team leader. Blanche (Mystic) shows blue, Candela (Valor) red, Spark (Instinct) yellow. The bucket logic is the same regardless of which leader you picked:

  • IV 0-5: bar is dim / single-segment
  • IV 6-7: bar shows 2 segments
  • IV 8-12: bar shows 2-3 segments
  • IV 13-14: bar shows 3 segments without glow
  • IV 15: bar is fully filled with red highlight on the rightmost segment

Layer 3: the corner ★ — your shortcut

The fastest tell: look at the top of the appraisal screen. A subtle star icon next to the rarity badge indicates 100% IV (true hundo). Three stars below it (or four including the badge) is the official 100% indicator. Two stars + 2 stat bars red = 80-99%. One star = under 80%.

STAR COUNT QUICK REFERENCE

1 star = 0-49% IV. 2 stars = 50-79% IV. 3 stars = 80-99% IV. 4 stars / red border = 100% IV (true wonder). Hundo Hunter shows the exact percent number under the ★ count in your storage row.

The 5-second appraisal workflow

  1. Open appraisal. Glance at the star count in the corner: 4 stars means stop, you have a hundo.
  2. If 3 stars, scan the three bars top-to-bottom. Count red-glowing bars (= 15). Count fully-filled non-glowing bars (= 10). Estimate partial segments (= 1-4, 6-9, 11-14).
  3. Read team-leader text only if the bars are ambiguous. The leader phrases ("can't be beat", "the best I've ever seen", "amazing") confirm the per-stat IV bucket.
  4. Tap the next mon. Repeat. With practice this is 3-4 seconds per mon.

Why colors matter for raid catches

Raid catches floor at 10/10/10 IV with weather boost guaranteeing 4/4/4 minimum. So every raid catch falls into the 'at least 1.5 segments filled' bucket. If you see ANY bar showing less than 1.5 segments after a raid catch, the appraisal is buggy — close and re-open it. (This happens after particularly long raid catches when the game state lags.)

What Hundo Hunter does differently

Hundo Hunter's broadcast scanner reads the appraisal screen directly. It detects the catch-description marker ("This X was caught on DATE around PLACE"), parses the stat bars, and writes the IV spread + catch date + location into your collection — no typing. You just keep tapping mons in-game; the app fills your vault in the background.

You can also do appraisal-free IV reads with our IV calculator: tap in (level, CP, HP, dust cost) and it returns the IV spread instantly. Useful for legacy mons or when the appraisal animation is too slow.

READING IVS IN HUNDO HUNTER

Open Hundo Hunter, tap Live Capture, arm the scanner, then go through your in-game storage tapping each mon to open the appraisal. The Live Activity widget shows a green check for each successful read. Brand-safe note: scanner currently English-only — switch the game to English in Settings → General → Language before scanning. Multi-language OCR is coming in v1.3.

Bottom line

The appraisal screen is a high-bandwidth visual signal. Once you internalize the bar-segment + red-glow + corner-star rules, reading IVs takes 3 seconds without any math. Combined with a hands-free scanner, you can audit a 6 000-mon storage in 90 minutes flat. Cross-reference everything with the IV calculator and the Functional Hundos guide to know what to keep, what to trade, and what to grind XL on.
