Throw bonus guide
Every wild catch and post-raid catch goes through the throw modifier. Combine throw quality, curveball, type medal, and berry — and you can multiply your base catch rate by ~10x against difficult mons. Here's the math.
The shrinking white inner ring tells you the bonus tier. The smaller it is when your ball lands inside, the higher the bonus.
Smallest reliable throw bonus. Inner circle 85 %+ of the outer ring.
Sweet spot — most catches should land here.
Inner ring half the outer. The optimum, but easy to miss.
Curveball multiplier
Spin the ball before throwing — visible curve on flight path. Multiplies on top of the Nice/Great/Excellent bonus.
Curveball stacks multiplicatively on top of throw quality. A Nice + Curveball is roughly 1.0 × 1.7 = 1.7×, which already beats a no-spin Excellent.
| Combo | Multiplier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plain straight | ×1.0 | Worst. The "tap to throw" throw with no aiming. |
| Nice + Curveball | ×1.7 – ×2.21 | ×1.0–1.3 × ×1.7. Easy combo to learn. |
| Great + Curveball | ×2.21 – ×2.89 | ×1.3–1.7 × ×1.7. The cruise altitude. |
| Excellent + Curveball | ×2.89 – ×3.4 | The gold standard. Almost doubles your effective catch rate. |
Multiply all of these together. Against a 5★ legendary with a 3 % base catch rate, the full stack pushes effective rate to ~30 % per ball — ~10× the unmodified rate.
Excellent + Curveball throw
Type medal × 2 (dual-type, both Platinum)
Golden Razz Berry
Premier Ball quality (Premier balls only)
Wait for the inner ring to fully shrink before throwing. Throwing during a wobble usually misses the small target. Time it to land just as the ring is at the size you want.
Apply the berry before the throw, not after. The bonus only applies to the next ball thrown with that berry active.
Dual-type mons use the average of both type medals. Push at least one of the two to Platinum (×1.4) to get the high end. Medal page →
5 consecutive Excellent throws unlock a Field Research bonus and count toward L48-tier tasks. Practice on common spawns, not legendaries — easier targets to time.
