Master League used to be a three-mon meta. In 2026 it's twenty. Niantic's last four balance passes opened up Necrozma, Origin Palkia, Zacian Hero, and a half-dozen shadow legendaries, and the result is the deepest ML meta we've ever seen. This post lists every viable pick with current Silph + GBL usage data, what it counters, and what it costs to build.
The top 20, ranked by Silph + GBL Legend-rank usage
- Dialga (Steel/Dragon) — 31% usage. Lead anchor. Dragon Breath spam + Iron Head + Draco Meteor.
- Mewtwo (Psychic) — 26% usage. Closer. Psycho Cut + Psystrike + Shadow Ball.
- Groudon (Ground) — 22% usage. Anti-Dialga swap. Mud Shot + Precipice Blades + Fire Punch.
- Zacian Hero (Fairy/Steel) — 21% usage. Snarl + Play Rough + Wild Charge. The 2025 buff made it S-tier.
- Necrozma — 18% usage. Best Psychic alternative. Confusion + Photon Geyser + Wicked Blow.
- Origin Palkia (Water/Dragon) — 16% usage. Spacial Rend + Aqua Tail. Anti-Dialga without losing Dragon damage.
- Shadow Mewtwo — 14% usage. The 20% attack boost makes Psystrike a one-shot in most ML matchups.
- Kyogre (Water) — 12% usage. Waterfall spam + Origin Pulse. Anti-Groudon hard counter.
- Garchomp (Dragon/Ground) — 11% usage. Mud Shot + Outrage + Earth Power. Cheap to build vs Dialga.
- Reshiram (Dragon/Fire) — 10% usage. Fire Fang + Fusion Flare + Draco Meteor. Anti-Steel.
- Zekrom (Dragon/Electric) — 9% usage. Charge Beam + Wild Charge + Fusion Bolt. Anti-Kyogre + anti-Steel.
- Ho-Oh (Fire/Flying) — 8% usage. Incinerate + Sacred Fire + Brave Bird. Anti-Steel + anti-Grass.
- Yveltal (Dark/Flying) — 7% usage. Snarl + Hurricane + Dark Pulse. Anti-Necrozma.
- Xerneas (Fairy) — 7% usage. Geomancy + Megahorn + Moonblast. Anti-Dragon, paired with Zacian.
- Solgaleo (Psychic/Steel) — 6% usage. Metal Claw + Sunsteel Strike + Psychic Fangs. Anti-Fairy.
- Eternatus (Poison/Dragon) — 5% usage. Dragon Tail + Dynamax Cannon + Cross Poison. Anti-Fairy + anti-Dragon mirror.
- Lugia (Psychic/Flying) — 5% usage. Dragon Tail + Aeroblast + Sky Attack. Bulky defensive pick.
- Shadow Salamence (Dragon/Flying) — 4% usage. Dragon Tail + Outrage. Cheap shadow alternative to Rayquaza.
- Origin Dialga (Steel/Dragon) — 4% usage. Roar of Time + Iron Head. Slow burn but devastating.
- Shadow Tyranitar (Rock/Dark) — 3% usage. Smack Down + Stone Edge + Crunch. Anti-Mewtwo specialist.
The four meta archetypes
Archetype 1: meta core (Dialga + Groudon + Mewtwo)
Safe, balanced, expensive. ~2.3M Stardust + ~900 XL Candy. The default for new ML grinders. Beats every team that doesn't specifically anti-meta. Loses ~45/55 to pure anti-Dialga teams (Garchomp + Reshiram + Zekrom).
Archetype 2: anti-meta (Garchomp + Reshiram + Zekrom)
Hard-counters the meta core. ~1.7M dust + ~700 XL. Cheaper than meta core, wins 55/45 vs meta core. Loses to ANY team that doesn't run Dialga (Kyogre teams, Yveltal swings, Solgaleo walls). Risky in Legend rank where teams diversify.
Archetype 3: Fairy beatdown (Zacian + Xerneas + Solgaleo)
Post-2025 buff this is now top-2 viable. ~2.1M dust + ~800 XL. Beats every Dragon-heavy team. Loses to Steel-heavy teams (Solgaleo helps but Dialga still beats Zacian in long fights).
Archetype 4: Necrozma sweep (Necrozma + Origin Palkia + Shadow Mewtwo)
High skill cap, highest ceiling. ~2.5M dust + ~900 XL. Necrozma's Photon Geyser is a one-shot on most squishies. Loses to anti-Psychic teams (Yveltal + Tyranitar + Eternatus).
Investment cost reality
- ▸L50 + Best Buddy single mon: ~250 000 Stardust + 296 XL Candy + 1 Elite Charged TM (if legacy move) + 75 normal candy.
- ▸A full ML team (3 mons): ~750 000 Stardust + 900 XL Candy + up to 3 Elite TMs.
- ▸XL Candy via remote raids: 1 XL per ~3 raids on average. 900 XL = 2 700 remote raids = ~$135 in remote-raid passes if you buy them.
- ▸XL via trading: each trade has ~7% chance of producing 1 XL. 900 XL via trades = ~13 000 trades. Realistically you grind a mix.
Start with Mewtwo + Dialga. Both work in raids AND ML. Add a third based on your local meta — Groudon if your friends run Dialga, Garchomp if they run Mewtwo, Zacian if Fairy is rising. Use the DPS calculator to confirm your raid use-case before committing 250k dust to a hundo.
Mons that are NOT viable anymore (do not waste XL)
- ▸Melmetal (still strong in raids but fell out of ML top 30 after the Dynamax meta shift)
- ▸Togekiss (Charm + Aura Sphere — Zacian and Xerneas do its job better with more Steel coverage)
- ▸Snorlax (CP-cap reasons, no longer competes in unrestricted ML)
- ▸Giratina Origin (was top-5 in 2023, now niche)
- ▸Latios / Latias (decent but every other Dragon out-tempos them)
Tools to plan your build
- ▸Use the tier list for the live, refreshed-quarterly ranking — Silph Arena + GBL data merged.
- ▸Use the PvP IV rank calculator for Master League — rank 1 is always 15/15/15, but appraise first.
- ▸Use the DPS calculator to compare specific movesets across attackers.
- ▸Cross-check head-to-heads at /vs/zacian-vs-mewtwo and our other matchup pages.
- ▸Plan raid coverage with /raid — most of your ML investments double as top raid attackers.
Bottom line
The 2026 ML meta is the deepest it has ever been. Twenty mons are viable, four archetypes are competitive at Legend rank, and the cost of a complete team is ~750k Stardust + ~900 XL. Pick one archetype, max it, then build a counter-archetype as your second team. The Master League team-building 2026 post has the full builder's path.
