Fire & Ice Hatch Day Overview

The Fire & Ice Hatch Day event runs on August 8th, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time. This is your prime opportunity to hatch Magby and Smoochum more frequently from 2 km event eggs. Larvesta will also be available from these eggs, though without a boosted shiny rate. Prepare your egg inventory to maximize your hatches during this limited window.

Featured Hatches & Shiny Odds

During the event, Magby and Smoochum will hatch exclusively from 2 km event eggs collected from PokéStops between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Both will have a boosted shiny rate of 1 in 10, making this your best chance to get their rare shiny forms. Larvesta will also be in these eggs, but maintains its standard shiny rate. For hundo hunters, look for Magby at 756 CP, Smoochum at 738 CP, and Larvesta at 855 CP from these hatches.

Optimize Your Egg Hatches

To make the most of this event, clear your existing egg inventory *before* 11:00 AM local time on August 8th. Only 2 km eggs obtained from PokéStops *during* the event will contain Magby, Smoochum, and Larvesta. You'll benefit from 2x Hatch Candy and 1/2 Hatch Distance. A free Timed Research will also reward an Incubator, so claim it promptly. Consider purchasing the Summer Marathon Deluxe Go Pass and progressing to rank 20 for a potential quarter hatch distance bonus.

Meta Relevance & PvP Ranks

While Smoochum and Magby's evolutions, Jynx and Magmortar, aren't top-tier in PvP (Magby GL #602, Smoochum GL #678), Magmortar can be a strong budget Fire-type attacker for max battles. Powering up Magmortar requires a Sinnoh Stone, obtainable from research breakthroughs and other in-game activities. Larvesta's evolution, Volcarona, is a good Bug/Fire type, but Larvesta itself sits at GL #581. This event is more about shiny hunting and candy accumulation for potential future uses.

Countering Larvesta, Magby & Smoochum

If you need to battle these mons, knowing their weaknesses is key. Larvesta (Bug/Fire) is critically weak to Rock (2.56x) and also weak to Water and Flying. Top Rock counters include Shadow Rhyperior and Mega Diancie. Magby (Fire) is weak to Water, Ground, and Rock, with Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon being excellent choices. Smoochum (Ice/Psychic) has many weaknesses: Fire, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dark, and Steel. Mega Charizard Y (Fire) and Mega Heracross (Bug) are strong options.
