Stardust is the bottleneck for every serious player. The grind from L40 to L50 Best Buddy for a single mon is ~250 000 Stardust. A full Master League team is ~750k. Most trainers grind dust the slow way — catching wild spawns, doing the occasional Spotlight Hour. Here are the 5 mistakes that cost you 30-50% efficiency, and how to fix them.
Mistake 1: Powering up non-Lucky mons before lucky ones
Lucky mons cost HALF the Stardust to power up. A Lucky hundo Dialga to L50 costs ~125 000 dust instead of ~250 000. If you have a 96% Lucky AND a 100% non-Lucky of the same species, math says max the Lucky first — the 4% IV gap is invisible in-game, but 125k Stardust saved is ~3 weeks of casual grinding.
Any mon caught before July 2020 that gets traded is GUARANTEED Lucky. This includes Pokémon Home transfers, traded research breakthroughs, and old daily catches. Use the Lucky Trade calculator to check eligibility — Hundo Hunter auto-flags pre-2020 mons in your storage with a green 'Guaranteed Lucky on trade' badge.
Mistake 2: Ignoring the Best Buddy 50% discount
Once you hit Best Buddy status (4 hearts × ~80 actions), your mon's effective level cap raises by 1, AND the power-up cost from L40 to L50 is reduced by 50% compared to non-best-buddied. Walk your build target as buddy through the Best Buddy grind BEFORE you start dumping dust into it.
Time investment: ~30 days at 5 km/day to hit Best Buddy via walking. Or use Poffins (Pinap-derived) to triple-action a single feeding session and hit BB in ~10 days.
Mistake 3: Burning Star Pieces during dead time
A Star Piece grants 1.5× Stardust for 30 minutes. The naive use is 'pop it whenever'. The optimizer use is to stack it with EVERY OTHER multiplier available:
- ▸Spotlight Hour with 2× catch dust → Star Piece = 3.0× per catch
- ▸Community Day with 1.5× catch dust → Star Piece = 2.25× per catch
- ▸Weather boost adds 25% catch dust → Star Piece = 1.875× per catch
- ▸Lucky catch chain (Excellent throws) → no multiplier but compounds with above
Optimal Star Piece use: Spotlight Hour featuring a high-dust species (Roselia, Klink, Foongus, similar) gives 1 000 dust per catch × 3× multiplier = 3 000 dust per catch. 60 catches in 30 min = 180 000 dust per Star Piece. Casual use during dead time gets you ~30 000 dust per Star Piece.
Mistake 4: Trading away dust on bad re-rolls
Each trade costs Stardust based on friendship level. Good Friends ~16 000 dust per trade, Best Friends 800 dust, Lucky trade ~100 dust. The Stardust cost compounds fast — 100 trades at Good Friends level = 1.6M dust gone. Always hit Best Friends BEFORE trading anything you care about.
Friend trades when both players are Best Friends cost 800 dust per trade. Trade 50 commons back and forth daily = 40 000 dust + 50 candy each + a chance at Lucky on each trade. The 50-trade daily cap is the limiter, not the dust. Use the Trade Reroll calculator to see if a specific trade is worth attempting.
Mistake 5: Not tracking your dust per hour
Trainers who hit ML-ready teams in 6 months track their dust/hour like a stock portfolio. The rest take 2 years. Here's the rough ranking:
- ▸Spotlight Hour + Star Piece + high-dust species: ~360 000 dust/hour
- ▸Community Day + Star Piece + Pinap catches: ~280 000 dust/hour
- ▸Raid hour + Silver Pinap + Star Piece: ~150 000 dust/hour
- ▸Casual catching during Star Piece: ~90 000 dust/hour
- ▸Casual catching no Star Piece: ~30 000 dust/hour
- ▸Trade dust grinding (best friends, 50 daily): ~40 000 dust/day total
Spotlight Hour is 12× more efficient than casual catching. Prioritize ruthlessly. The Stardust calculator projects how long a given build target will take based on your current dust/hour.
The optimizer workflow
- Pick your build target (use the tier list and Master League meta post).
- Check if you have a Lucky version of the species — if not, start trading toward one via Lucky Trade eligibility.
- Set the mon as Buddy. Walk daily until Best Buddy (~30 days).
- In parallel: stockpile Star Pieces (research, weekly box, level-up rewards).
- When Spotlight Hour or Community Day for a high-dust species arrives, Star Piece + catch for 60 minutes straight.
- Use /friends to coordinate cheap-dust trades during dead time. 50 trades/day at Best Friends = ~40k dust for ~10 min effort.
- Track total dust + build target progress in Hundo Hunter; mark mons as "Save for Best Buddy" so you don't accidentally power up suboptimally.
Before you click Power Up on any mon, paste it into the Power Up calculator. If the projected dust for L50 BB is more than 1% of your current bank, hold off — there's almost certainly a better target in your storage that costs less per unit performance.
Bottom line
Lucky cuts cost in half. Best Buddy cuts L40-L50 in half AGAIN. Star Piece stacks with event multipliers for 3× efficiency. Friend trades give you 40k/day free. Most trainers ignore all four and grind 5× harder for the same team. The Stardust calculator and the Friends calculator together let you plan a build path that ships in months, not years.
