GBL is the ranked online PvP matchmaking. You queue into 5 sets of 5 battles per day for ~4000 Stardust and an encounter reward each set. Higher ranks reward rarer encounters (Pikachu Libre at Legend rank).
Ranks 1-20 are XP-grind ranks — you can never lose rank, just keep playing. Ranks 21-24 are skill-based with rating MMR. Legend (24) requires sustained 3000 rating, the top tier.
Seasons last 3 months. Each season rotates leagues (Great → Ultra → Master) and introduces themed Cups like Retro, Catch, or Element Cup.
