Trainer Level is your account's overall progression. The cap is 50. XP requirements ramp aggressively — L40 to L50 alone needs ~176 million XP and a chain of Special Research tasks.
Trainer Level caps your mons power-ups at Trainer Level + 2. A new player at Trainer Level 25 can only build up to L27 — pointless to feed XL candy into a future hundo until you grind your account level higher.
