Advanced tactics for veteran trainers

Ten power-user moves that don't show up in the new-trainer pillars. Some are hidden mechanics (the 35-trade Lucky cap), some are quality-of-life (claw quick catch, search shortcuts), some are pure economy (team color, Gold Gyms, Route streaks). With pointers to the deep dives on functional hundos and search syntax.

01 · THE 10 ADVANCED MOVES
#1Switch teams for the gym item economy

Gym item bonuses depend on team color. If your city is dominated by one team and you're on a minority team, you're permanently bleeding 1–2 items per gym spin. The Team Medallion in the shop lets you switch.

  • · Spinning a gym your team controls gives +1–2 items vs neutral. Add Gold Gym +3 and you can hit 6–8 items per spin instead of 3.
  • · Raid Premier Balls also scale with team-color match: catching a Legendary in a Gold Gym you control is the highest ball-count setup possible.
  • · Cost: 1 000 PokéCoins. Switch as often as you move cities, but realistically: switch once, stay there.
  • · Trade-off: your team-based achievements (defending a gym for X hours, etc.) lock to the new team. Don't switch mid-medal grind.
#2Functional hundos — hidden 100 % IV statsFull functional hundo lookup

Some 98–99 % IV mons calculate to identical stats as a true 100 %, because the HP stat is the only one that rounds. If two IV spreads round to the same HP at your power level, the mons are functionally identical at every relevant stat.

  • · The HP stat is the only rounded one in PvE — so 15/15/14 HP rounds to the same integer as 15/15/15 HP for many species at L40-L51.
  • · Some species are functional hundos at L40-41 but stop being at L50-51 (or vice versa).
  • · Examples: Mewtwo at L40, Celebi at L51, Kyogre and Groudon across the board, Dialga at all levels, Reshiram/Zekrom/Landorus at all levels.
  • · You probably already have hidden functional hundos in your account — full lookup is in the dedicated tool.
#3Stack Rocket Radars across event cyclesFull Shadow Legendary path

Team GO Rocket Takeover special research can only be 'completed' one at a time — but stopping each one at Page 1 prevents it from registering as active. You can hold multiple radar-earning lines in parallel.

  • · When a new Takeover starts, accept the research but DO NOT complete Page 1. The system treats incomplete-Page-1 as inactive.
  • · Over multiple events you can stack 4–5 unstarted research lines. When the next Shadow Legendary you want appears, complete the lines back-to-back to chain Giovanni encounters.
  • · Caveat: special research that requires a radar to complete (battles vs Giovanni) consumes radars when you finish — you can't hold infinite radars in inventory.
  • · Galarian birds research counts separately — not part of the Takeover stack.
#4Lucky Trade caps — the 35-trade ruleLucky trade planner

Pokémon caught in 2019 or earlier have a guaranteed-Lucky chance when traded. But the guarantee only fires while the sender has been in fewer than 35 guaranteed-Lucky trades (sender OR receiver).

  • · There is no UI counter for this. You can't check your current count.
  • · Once a sender hits 35 guaranteed-Lucky trades, future trades fall back to the standard ~5 % Lucky odds.
  • · Strategy: pair with trade partners early, save 2019-or-older Pokémon for the high-value trades you want guaranteed Lucky.
  • · Receiver-side trades also count. If you're on the receiving end of 35 guaranteed-Lucky trades, your future guaranteed-Lucky pool is exhausted as a sender too.
#5Meet-up egg distance — 25 % off, stacks with halved events

Community Ambassador meet-ups grant Party members a 25 % egg incubator distance reduction. This stacks multiplicatively with the half-egg-distance event bonuses.

  • · 2 km eggs become 0.38 km when stacked with a half-egg-distance event (2 × 0.5 × 0.75).
  • · 5 km eggs become 0.94 km. 7 km eggs become 1.31 km. 10 km eggs become 1.88 km. 12 km eggs become 2.25 km.
  • · Requirement: check in at a meet-up hosted by a Community Ambassador (filter by host type in Campfire), then join an active Party during the meet-up window.
  • · No half-egg-distance event? Still 1.5 km / 3.75 km / 5.25 km / 7.5 km / 9 km with the 25 % reduction alone — still meaningful.
#6Route 7-day streak — Elite Fast TM

Completing a Route 7 days in a row rolls a chance at an Elite Fast TM. It's the only free recurring source.

  • · Elite TMs are otherwise locked behind paid event passes or PvP rank rewards.
  • · The 7-day streak resets on miss. Don't skip; the punishment is rolling the streak back to 1.
  • · Combine with the Zygarde cell grind — you're walking the route anyway.
  • · Elite Fast TM lets you teach legacy fast moves (e.g. Gust on Dragonite, Mega Drain on Venusaur) that the regular TM pool doesn't include.
#7Search shortcuts — type once, search foreverFull search syntax reference

Modern phone keyboards let you set custom text shortcuts. Define a shortcut like 'ivc' that expands to the full IV-calc search string. Saves seconds per search, hours per month.

  • · On Android: System Settings → Languages & Input → On-screen keyboard → text shortcuts. iOS: Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement.
  • · Useful shortcuts: 'candycolometer 1 & shadow' (cheap purifies), '10,13,16,265,293,519' (12-candy evolves), '4*' (hundos), 'shiny&!lucky' (lucky trade candidates).
  • · Inside the game, the search bar also lets you save threads — tap See more, long-press any recent thread, favorite it. Long-press again to rename.
  • · Sort your favorites by tap frequency, not alphabetically.
#8Smart tag — what every veteran needsSearch + tag library

Tags are stickier than search threads — they don't reset, and you can scope them tightly. Six tags every advanced trainer should have.

  • · Power-up tag: mons you're actively investing in. Doubles as your task-target list when 'power up X Pokémon' lands.
  • · Mega level-up tag: mons you Mega-evolve daily to grind to Max Mega Level.
  • · Bottle Cap tag: hyper-trained or hyper-train-target mons. Easy to verify what's already capped.
  • · Trade-away tag: 2019-or-older spares to bank for guaranteed Lucky trades.
  • · Showcase tag: every XXL you've kept for showcases.
  • · Evolve-12-candy tag: mons ready for Evolve XP events — pre-stacked.
#9Sort your friends list for the gift opening rotation

Default friends list is hard to navigate. Nicknames let you partition it.

  • · 'local' for nearby trainers — prioritize for trade meetups.
  • · 'winner' for friend code giveaway adds.
  • · 'creator' for content creators — high lucky-trade value.
  • · Search 'interactable & !lucky' to filter gift senders you can interact with but aren't Lucky with — your Lucky trade candidate pool.
  • · Combine with the local tag to prioritize opening gifts from local trainers (postcard variety + meetup potential).
#10Claw quick catch — one-handed catching

When you only have one hand free, the standard two-thumb quick catch is impossible. The claw grip works around that.

  • · Hold the phone vertically with three fingers (middle, ring, pinky) pressed against the back; pinky stops slide-down.
  • · Index finger on top — this is your throwing finger. Thumb holds the corner.
  • · Press and hold the Berry Tray icon with your thumb (keeps the catch screen active), then claw the ball with your index finger — drag + release in one motion.
  • · Quick catch trick still works: open the catch screen, hold the berry tray to dismiss the throw, then run from the encounter to catch it. Pair with this one-handed grip and you can speed-catch on a walk.
02 · USE THE DETAIL SCREEN

Every species' detail page now shows: full type effectiveness, all move options including legacy / Elite TM moves, base stats, raid CP at L20 and L25 capture, Mega line, Shadow availability, shiny status. Tap Battle on a mons in your collection for the type-effectiveness overlay.

Elite TM and legacy move tags appear next to the move name. Pre-check before burning an Elite TM — some species don't actually want their legacy move.

03 · FAQ
Is the 35-trade Lucky cap really invisible?

Yes. There is no in-game counter for how many guaranteed-Lucky trades you've been in (as sender or receiver). The cap is enforced silently; once you hit it, future 2019-or-older trades fall back to the standard ~5 % Lucky rate. The community-confirmed threshold is 35 total trades.

Does the Mega level-up tag affect Mega Energy costs?

Indirectly. Daily Mega-evolving the same mons drops the energy cost over a 90-day window (with one Mega per day) until it costs near-zero energy. Tagging the mons makes the daily Mega-evolve trivial — open the tag, evolve, done.

Can I stack the meet-up egg bonus with multiple half-egg events?

No. Egg distance multipliers don't stack with themselves — only one 'half egg distance' bonus applies at a time. But the meet-up 25 % bonus is separate and DOES stack on top, because it's an additive Party bonus rather than a multiplicative event bonus.

What happens if I miss a Route day in the 7-day streak?

Your streak resets to 1. The Elite Fast TM is gated on the 7th consecutive day, so a single miss costs you up to 6 days of progress. Set a daily phone reminder if you're chasing the TMs.

How many Rocket Radars can I really stack?

As many as there are unclaimed Page-1 special research lines in your account. If you've been holding all the takeover research at Page 1 for a year, you might have 5–8 stacked Giovanni encounters in the bank for the next Shadow Legendary you actually want.

Why won't my third raid party load when the lobby starts?

Battle party slots are saved by name + composition. If you renamed a party or transferred a member, the slot might be empty or invalid when the raid lobby tries to auto-load it. Pre-verify each party by opening it once before the raid hour starts.
