26 tips to master the game in 2026

A full-year playbook for the 2026 season — the Scopely era, the 10-year anniversary, Gen 10, the Dynamax push. The through-line: the game is getting more expensive and more feature-dense, so the real skill is resource discipline. No hype, just what to actually do.

00 · WHY THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT

2026 stacks three things at once: the game's 10-year anniversary, Pokémon's 30th, and Gen 10's debut — all under Scopely, which acquired the game in 2025 and is actively expanding paid surfaces. More events, more features, more ways to spend.

That changes the optimal play. When the game was simple, raw activity was enough. Now the constraint is resources — Stardust, candy, Elite TMs, Max Particles, and money. Every tip below is, at its core, a resource-allocation decision.

TIPS 01–09 · FOUNDATIONS
01

Budget for a more expensive year

Scopely acquired the game in 2025, and 2026 brings more paid events, paid raid weekends, and premium tickets. Decide a monthly spend cap before the events arrive. Watch for bundled raids that pull resources toward a boss you didn't come for — spend on what you actually need.

02

Mega evolve before every raid

A Mega at max Mega Level, active during catches, grants bonus candy, bonus XL candy, and bonus XP. The bonus only applies to mons sharing the Mega's type — during an electric-spawn event, mega-evolve an Electric-type. Max Mega Level (one mega-evolution per day for 90 days) drops the energy cost to near-zero.

03

Expect a steady stream of new features

The Scopely era shipped weekly challenges, Forever Friends, and remote trading in quick succession. New features change what is worth doing each week — stay current so a mechanic does not pass you by.

04

Tag your collection now

Each new feature — Mega, Max, bottle caps, lucky trades — interacts with specific mons. A tagged collection lets you act the moment a feature drops; an untagged one leaves you scrolling.

05

Special backgrounds are the new top rarity tier

Location and special backgrounds now sit above shiny in the rarity hierarchy. Special-background shinies are among the rarest things in the game — and the hardest to chase without spending.

06

Don't skip the mini events

Spotlight Hours and small weekly events are easy to dismiss, but they are the most reliable way to target a specific species or type — useful for medal grinds and filling gaps in your raid teams.

07

Stack your Research Breakthrough rewards

You don't have to claim a Breakthrough the moment the seventh stamp lands. Hold it and claim during an event with a favorable encounter — a shiny-boosted window, for example.

08

Know the premium items before you need them

The Lucky Trinket (guarantees a lucky trade) and similar premium items can be genuinely useful. Understand what each one does before an event puts it in front of you under time pressure.

09

Shadow mons are still the damage kings

Shadow forms deal roughly 20% more damage at the cost of roughly 20% less bulk. Shadow Raids are now remote-raidable and ship higher IV floors — a better shot at a usable Shadow attacker.

10

Gen 10 arrives this year

2026 is Pokémon's 30th anniversary and Gen 10's debut. Do not expect the full generation at once — a handful of species will drip in, and any of them could shift the type meta. Worth staying current on announcements.

11

The game turns 10

The 10-year anniversary lands in June/July 2026 — squarely inside GO Fest season. Historically the anniversary window carries the largest event or feature drop of the year. Plan to be active that summer.

12

Build one strong team per type

Raids reward typed attackers. Aim for three to six powered-up mons in each major offensive type — Fire, Water, Grass, Dragon, Rock, Ground especially. When you are short on a type, prioritize that type's events and Community Days.

13

Use your Daily Adventure Incense

It is the only free incense, and events frequently extend it (15 minutes to 30, sometimes an hour) through the GO Pass. It is also one of the only free sources of legendary mons — the Galarian legendary birds spawn on it, shiny-eligible.

14

Dynamax is getting a bigger push

After a quiet launch, Dynamax found traction — Eternatus debuted exclusively in the Max system. Expect more exclusives and Gigantamax releases in 2026. The Max Particle economy makes it expensive; budget particles like any other resource.

15

Don't burn your Stardust

A meta-shifting year is coming — new Megas, Gen 10, returning legendaries. Bank dust now so you can power up the new top-tier mons the moment they release, instead of scrambling for dust afterward.

16

Interact with friends every day

Best Friend unlocks cheaper trades and Lucky Friend status. Another 90 days of daily interaction unlocks Forever Friend — required for remote trading. Friendship is also the single best free XP source in the game.

17

Hold your Elite TMs

An Elite TM is the only way to put a legacy or Community Day move on a mon outside its event window. With many returning species expected in 2026, save them for a move that genuinely matters rather than spending on a whim.

18

New Megas are inbound

Pokémon Legends Z-A announced Mega Dragonite, Mega Chesnaught, Mega Decidueye, and Mega Greninja. The Mega Evolution card set adds Mega Zygarde, Mega Starmie, Mega Clefable, and Mega Skarmory. Megas are usually the best attacker of their type — watch for these reaching the game.

TIPS 19–26 · EFFICIENCY
19

Use Campfire

Niantic's social and map layer shows nearby raids — including Dynamax, Gigantamax, and legendary — and connects you with the local community for event coordination. Underrated for raid hunting.

20

Keep event and costume mons for trades

With many exclusive cosmetic releases expected, most trainers will miss some. A stash of tagged costume and background mons makes good trade fodder — and an easy favour for friends who do not log in for every event.

21

Walk a strategic buddy

Buddy walking earns candy and 25 Mega Energy per 5 km — free Mega Energy with no raids required. Walk a mon you actually need: Kyurem to fuel Freeze Shock, Palkia to fuel Spatial Rend, or any Mega-capable species to bank energy toward max Mega Level.

22

Grind platinum medals

Level 80 requires 50 platinum medals. XP requirements were rebalanced downward, so medals are now the real gate. Type-catch medals (2,500 catches of a type) also grant a permanent catch-rate bonus for that type.

23

Play GO Battle League for Stardust

GO Battle League is the single highest-throughput Stardust source. In a year that demands dust for new releases, that matters even if PvP is not your main interest — a few sets per day compounds fast.

24

Don't ignore the small tasks

Weekly challenges, Showcases, and Field Research stay free as the rest of the game gets more expensive. They yield real rewards — encounters, items, Mega Energy — for low effort. On a budget, these are where the value is.

25

Manage your storage

Keep 100-200 free slots so a big event does not force constant mid-session transfers. A saved cleanup search string clears recent non-keepers in one tap — search recent catches, then exclude shinies, traded, tagged, and high-IV mons.

Build a cleanup search string
26

Learn the Adventure Effects

Eight Adventure Effects exist — Roar of Time, Spatial Rend, Sunsteel Strike, Moongeist Beam, Freeze Shock, Ice Burn, Behemoth Blade, Behemoth Bash. They are fueled by legendary candy and expensive to run. Decide which fit your play style, then raid hard when that legendary returns. Freeze Shock (catch-rate boost, no dodging) and Spatial Rend (double spawn distance) are the standouts.

27 · THE BOTTOM LINE

If 26 tips is too many to action at once, start with three habits: mega-evolve a type-matched Mega before every catch session (tip 2), bank Stardust for the meta shifts coming (tip 15), and keep your collection tagged so you can use each new feature the day it drops (tip 4). Those three compound quietly all year.

28 · FAQ
What is the single most important tip for 2026?

Resource discipline. The game is getting more expensive and more feature-dense under Scopely, so the meta-skill is not spending — it is deciding where your Stardust, candy, Elite TMs, and money go. If you only adopt one habit, mega-evolve a type-matched Mega before every catch session: it compounds candy, XL candy, and XP across the whole year for free.

Is the game getting more expensive in 2026?

Yes. Scopely acquired the game in 2025 and 2026 is shaping up with more paid raid weekends, premium tickets, and bundled events. Set a monthly spend cap and watch for "creative monetization" — for example, raids placed next to the one you actually need so you spend twice.

When is the 10-year anniversary?

June or July 2026, inside GO Fest season. The anniversary window historically carries the biggest event or feature drop of the year, so it is the single best time to be active.

How do I unlock remote trading?

Through the Forever Friend tier. First reach Best Friend with someone (around three months of daily interaction), then interact daily for another 90 days to reach Forever Friend. Forever Friends can remote trade — including remote lucky trades.

How many platinum medals do I need for level 80?

50 platinum medals. The XP curve to level 80 was rebalanced downward, so XP is no longer the bottleneck — platinum medals are. Type-catch medals require 2,500 catches and double as a permanent catch-rate bonus for that type.

What are Adventure Effects and which are best?

Adventure Effects are activatable abilities on certain legendary forms, fueled by that legendary's candy. Freeze Shock (Black Kyurem) raises catch rate and stops the boss dodging — excellent for legendary raids. Spatial Rend (Origin Palkia) doubles spawn distance. Those two are the standouts; the rest are situational.

Should I save my Stardust?

Yes. 2026 brings Gen 10, new Megas, and returning legendaries that will shift the meta. Banking Stardust now means you can power up the new top-tier attackers the moment they release rather than grinding dust after the fact.

What is the best free XP source?

Friendship. Every friendship level-up grants a large XP bundle, and reaching Best Friend grants the largest. Filling your friends list and steadily working everyone toward Best Friend is the most efficient free XP in the game — pair it with a Lucky Egg for double.
